WinISIS in Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya Database

Database Management System
Database management system (DBMS) allows the users to create a existing data and to organize the data in proper sequence laten help to sort and index the data and to search or retrieve or print the required information from the database. Some popular DBM's software packages are MS Access, IMS, IDS, IDMS, ADABASE, ORACLE BASE, CONSIS, OMNIS, RBASE, FOXBASE, FoxPro, and MYSOL

Need of Database in SAMV

Presently, the number of students in the Mahavidyalaya from class IV to XII is 2564. Similarly, the number of staff is 316. Therefore, the database has become very essential for the people to know about the institution in general and for the institution itself in particular. It also helps the management of SAMV to get the necessary information about each of its members.

WinISIS

WinISIS is a Windows version of the CDS/ISIS system which was originated at ILO the early 60's and since 70's is maintained and developed by UNESCO for the management of information in libraries. In 1985, the first microcomputer version of CDS/ISIS was launched and since then it was disseminated to over 20,000 institutions in various countries. The first WinISIS version was officially launched in November 1998. It is a menu-driven generalized Information Storage and Retrieval System designed specifically for the computerized management of structured non-numerical databases. It is able to manipulate an unlimited number of databases each of which may consist of completely different data elements. SAMV is first institution in Nepal to manage students and staffs record with the help of WinISIS.

Functions

The major functions provided by WinISIS are:

  • To define data bases containing the required data elements
  • To enter new records into a given data base
  • To modify, correct or delete existing records
  • To display the records or portions thereof according to requirements
  • To sort the records in any sequence desired
  • To develop specialized applications using the CDS/ISIS integrated programming facility

How to Search

There are two types of search options available in WinISIS to retrieve required information, i.e. Expert Search and Guided Search. Expert search allows the formulation of sophisticated queries, including free text ones. Guided search interface is available for inexperienced users of the database. Retrieved terms can be highlighted in record contents during display. The Retrieved records can be marked during browsing the search results and then only the marked records will be displayed or can be printed. Queries can be saved on a disk and recalled during the subsequent search sessions.

Conclusion

SAMV has used WinISIS for its database and it is the first institution in Nepal to use this software to manage the record of students and staffs. It has been found that WinISIS is really worth using in the ever growing institutions like ours.
